The "twilight zone" between being awake and asleep

{This little understood state could explain everything from so called "alien abductions" to religious visitations.}

Re: The "twilight zone" between being awake and asleep
"from the Salem Witch Trials ..."
better explained by Ergot - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergot
The most prominent member of this group is Claviceps purpurea ("rye ergot fungus"). This fungus grows on rye and related plants, and produces alkaloids that can cause ergotism in humans and other mammals who consume grains contaminated with its fruiting structure
Long before I knew about :
"The technical term that might apply here is ‘sleep paralysis,’ a subtype of parasomnia, or sleep disturbance. Beyond the inability to move, these periods of wakeful paralysis are often accompanied with vivid multisensory hallucinations. Effectively, imagery from your dreams can actually intrude into your waking reality.
The content of hallucinations can often be thematically linked to the feeling of paralysis – manifesting as visions of an intruder in the bed who is physically holding the sleeper down."
... I knew all about it.
My friends would ask what it is really like to go to sea ... the real scoop. I'd tell them about being in my rack (bed) in a pounding sea. You can rest, but never really sleep. It is hours of the "twilight zone" between being awake and asleep, sometimes for several days at a time.
The effects were all the same as described here, including not being able to move, including the "pressing weight", except without terror, as I knew why I was all messed up ... and that of the rest the crew was all dealing with the same thing.
If ask if I still got seasick I'd say everyone always does in a bad pounding sea, but old hands don't puke anymore, they get grumpy ... and being a good shipmate means both not disturbing others with your, or letting their drama get to you.
But in reality I was suggesting that the effects of parasomnia, was seasick V. 2.0.

Re: The "twilight zone" between being awake and asleep
I experienced it a few times in the 10 yrs. I lived "without a man." I would worry about home invasion and being alone I thought I was awake and a strange man was standing over me ready to murder. It was horrible not being able to move a finger, it has always stuck with me and I think about it when sleep paralysis comes up, I still get the creeps and it was 25 yrs. ago.

Re: The "twilight zone" between being awake and asleep
I was paralyzed once in a medical heart stress test. It was terrible and I dream about it sometimes.

Re: The "twilight zone" between being awake and asleep
let’s first consider her report of waking up, unable to move, with a crushing presence on top of her. The technical term that might apply here is ‘sleep paralysis,’ a subtype of parasomnia, or sleep disturbance. Beyond the inability to move, these periods of wakeful paralysis are often accompanied with vivid multisensory hallucinations. Effectively, imagery from your dreams can actually intrude into your waking reality.
I experienced something like this years ago. I felt as though I was somewhat awake, could not move, perhaps someone was holding me down, but definitely like there was someone in the room.
Makes it easy to understand how some could think they were visited by aliens.

In a sense you were that other person.
It's good and natural to be generally be paralyzed when dreaming, otherwise acting out your dreams, especially your bad dreams, might get you hurt.
In this state one is having glitch were you are literally of two minds.
