Re: Scotland first country to supply femine hygene products for free

I havent been around much again - more drama!

about two weeks ago one of my fingers swelled up and became very painful, although I didnt remember injuring it I assumed that that is what I had done but when the swelling resolved somewhat my finger had assumed a 90degree bend in the middle which wouldnt straighten.

I contacted by family doctor who advised me to attend the local "accident and emergency" which I thought was a bit dramatic, I half expected to be chased away and told not to waste their time (our hospitals are completely overwhelmed at the minute) but no, I was examined (in short order) xrayed and had the finger splinted and within the hour I was getting back into my car with an appointment for the hand clinic 5 days later.

at the hand clinic it was determined that a ligament had snapped - but they dont know how or why but it may be related to a flake of bone which has split off the finger bone.
Any way thats me attending the hand clinic weekly for at least two months.

I know Katie has not got a high opinion of the NHS - and it isnt perfect - but I can honestly say that neither myself or any of my family has even recieved anthing but first class care from it.

Even though private health insurance is quite cheap here I know of no one that has bought it (my daughter has it as part of her remuneration package)

sorry to hear about your finger, mais oui. weird that you didn't notice a torn ligament.

When I was a kid, I witnessed a a guy running the 100 m sprint and he tore his achilles tendon, it happened right next to me as he passed, I saw his tendon and the surrounding skin ripple and snap seemingly in slow motion as the tendon whipped up the inside of his leg and wriggled around his calf muscle.

He let out the most horrendous blood curdling scream and collapsed on the ground. I will never, ever forget it.

I'm glad you didn't suffer that kind of pain. Honestly, I'd almost rather get shot in the crotch.

To be honest, my experience with the NHS is minimal. I lived in the UK for 3 years and never had need to use it, but considering that Americans have worse health care coverage than pretty much every other developed nation on the planet, should give some perspective to the fact that every system is flawed, but none more flawed than the one in use by the US....unless you are a politician, or filthy rich.

It isn't our health care coverage, which is great it is those who have none. I did not work for the NHS but with with them including social services who probably were the worst health care providers I have ever experienced. My professional experience with care/hospitals were dependent on what area you lived. In the posh areas it was brilliant in middle class/lower class, like 2nd world at some worse. It should not take 6 months to get an old lady whose house smells so bad of urine, a porta potty, itt should not take 4 months to get a CT for patients with known organ diseases, no hospital should be filthy including seeing feces and blood and no hospital should have huge wards where disease is easily passed. As a patient I had several experiences that I would not expect in a country like England. I was covered under my husbands employers private plan and if I needed surgery or certain procedures I would have used it. I have read where private ins. cost 1,000 to 1,500 pounds a year I think the NHS services are dependent on where you live, how the money is budgeted, the admin. running that budget and the staff. I would think most are doing the best they can but in many places it isn't good enough.

And sorry about your finger Mais Qui, you never mentioned pain, I had a blot clot and cyst removed from my middle finger 15 yrs. ago and I still can't forget how painful it was and how useless those fingers became, my husband had to do up everything that required, hooks, buttons or tying for 3 months. Hope your PT goes well.

But....there are public toilets where you have to pay 50p to use, some last yr. at train stations started dropping the fee. If you were out of coin though most nice gals as she left, let you enter. If no one was around, ouch.

Ive never been asked 50p - certainly 20p is common

there is a dodge that works almost every where which gets you in for free (after a one off payment of about £3.50)

due to cuts in coucil expenditure many public toilets have been closed some of these have been adopted by the local community and they ask for a donation but you dont have to make one but if it keeps them open I always dig deep into my pocket

Many of the stations in central London went from 20p to 50p, 3-4 yrs ago the largest ones, Victoria, Charing Cross, etc., became free. It's some of the outer boroughs, suburbs and rural areas that charge up to 50p.

I adore London and have never tired of it over 35 yrs . If you are into history for an American it doesn't get much better. If you go a mile away to Notting Hill the shops, Portobello Market to restaurants are hard to beat. And I loved the theatre, I went often. Or catching the boat at Richmond(which is an awesome borough on its own) down the Thames to Hampton Court, stopping at Kew Gardens, or canoeing on your own, stopping and having a picnic. I loved the theatre and eating at 10 pm. I loved the ability to be able to call up very late at night and have any kind of food delivered. The music venues big or small were fabulous, I saw Eric Clapton to Stevie NIcks at Albert Hall an impressive venue on its own. I saw Van Morrison/Ray Charles at Wembley and my first football match at Chelsea.
